About Joel C. Knoll and Bootstraps
My name is Joel C. Knoll. I am currently a student at a Community College in the United States. I will be transferring to the University of Arizona in Tucson to continue my undergraduate, and possibly graduate, work, majoring in macroeconomics and comprehensive mathematics.
My academic interests are wide, encompassing economics and math, of course, but also geography, philosophy, ecology, history, neuroscience, sociology, and religion. Within economics, my interests lean toward what Schumpeter called “economic thought” as contrasted to “economic analysis”, though I believe both are essential to a complete understanding of economic reality. Furthermore, I do not treat economics as a stand-alone science; instead, I locate it within the broader field of anthropology, which, in turn, I locate within the broader field of biology. In other words, I believe an understanding of economic reality – as of psychological, social, and cultural reality in general – begins not with the insights of Smith but with those of Darwin.
“Bootstraps” is as advertised: the musings of an economics student. For blogs from people who know a LOT more about this stuff, see my blogroll. In particular, I recommend Brad DeLong’s “Grasping Reality with Both Hands”, Nick Rowe’s “Worthwhile Canadian Initiative”, the Atlanta Fed’s “Macroblog” for macro buffs, and Tyler Cowen’s and Alex Tabarok’s “Marginal Revolution” for micro buffs. For monetary theory wonks like me, I recommend “The Money Illusion”.
Thank you for reading “Bootstraps”.
Joel,
Congratulations on your blog on economics; it’s a wonderful field, with much to learn and discuss. Indeed, that’s exactly why Moody’s Economy.com started a website almost 12 years ago, and called it –you guessed it — Dismal Scientist. As you might also guess, we trademarked the name. So while I think you should absolutely continue to blog on the topic–and would even be happy to link your blog to our own -– I would appreciate it if you’s find another name for your blog, so that readers and Web searchers aren’t confused.
Ok? Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.
All the best,
Andy Cassel
